English Classes (ESL) at Woodstock

Want to learn English or improve your English skills?
We offer six levels of instruction for anyone who wants to learn English. Classes run from August through May during the school year for all skill levels, from beginners who have no English skills to those who want to converse in English for business or pleasure. (Our beginner class continues during the summer.)

Class Levels

We offer six different English classes at levels ranging from beginner to advanced. The objective of each class is an integrated skills approach that focuses on teaching practical communication and the four communication skills of speaking, listening, reading and writing.

Level A

For beginner students who have no understanding of English.

Level A Details

  • The focus is on imitating the verbalizations of others by using single words or simple phrases. Illustrations, graphics, and objects are used to construct meaning.
  • By the end of Level A, students should be able to identify a few key words and phrases in oral communication and simple texts using a very limited set of strategies.
Level B

For beginner students who have very limited understanding of English.

Level B Details

  • The focus is on imitating the verbalizations of others by using simple words or simple phrases. Illustrations, graphics, and objects are used to construct meaning.
  • By the end of Level B, students should be able to identify a few key words and phrases in oral communications and simple texts using a very limited set of strategies while beginning to use English spontaneously in conversation.
Level 1

For beginner students who can understand phrases and short sentences, as well as communicate limited information in simple and routine situations.

Level 1 Details

  • The focus is on using simple sentence structures correctly.
  • By the end of Level 1, students should be able to use general vocabulary and familiar everyday expressions to identify the main topic in oral communications or simple texts and retell a few key details using an emerging set of strategies.
Level 2

For intermediate students who can understand more complex speech but still may require some repetition.

Level 2 Details

  • The focus is on developing vocabulary and use of sentence structures.
  • By the end of Level 2, students should be able to determine a theme in oral communications or texts, retell key details, answer questions about details, and summarize the main idea using a developing set of strategies.
Level 3

For intermediate students whose language skills are adequate for most day-to-day communication needs though they may have occasional difficulty in unfamiliar settings.

Level 3 Details

  • The focus is on expanding the use of more complex sentence structures and abstract vocabulary.
  • By the end of Level 3, students should be able to determine the central idea of oral communications or texts, analyze the development of ideas, cite details to support the analysis, and summarize the main idea using an increasing range of strategies.
Level 4

For advanced students who can express themselves fluently on a wide range of topics and require minimal guidance.

Level 4 Details

  • The focus is on producing clear, smoothly flowing, well-structured communication with greater complexity.
  • By the end of Level 4, students should be able to determine the central idea of a conversation or text, analyze the development of ideas, cite details to support the analysis, and summarize the main idea using a wide range of strategies.
